Art

Look at the different works of Gaudi http://whc.unesco.org/pg.cfm?cid=31&l=en&id_site=320&gallery=1&&maxrows=39 and the short clip http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/clips/zgrkq6f about his life. With an adult, look at the art work and describe what you see. Explore patterns, curved lines, shapes, bright colours, animals and nature.

Discuss that these words define a type of art called Art Nouveau which inspired Gaudi. The Art Nouveau style is applied not only to painting and sculpture but also to architecture, furniture, jewellery, fabrics. It can consist of curvy lines with smooth surfaces. The objects look as if they have grown from nature. Often, artists used natural objects for inspiration such as trees, flowers, and animals. Do you like this type of art? Share opinions. Antoni Gaudi was an architect and artist who was inspired by this style of art. He used mosaic (a picture or pattern produced by arranging together small pieces of stone, tile, glass). He also introduced new techniques, such as trencadís which used broken plates and cups to create his designs. Gaudi used shapes to make shapes!

You will now use a mosaic technique to create some Toucan art! Try to include some nature in your art too, e.g. trees or flowers. Your Toucan should be unique to you. When you have drawn your Toucan, you can start decorating your picture with paper mosaic.
