Attendance

Attendance

Everyone at Slyne-with-Hest St Luke's CE school is committed to promoting the importance of good attendance and punctuality.

We will support pupils and parents to achieve this, and we will work closely with parents where absence is a cause for concern.

We strive for 100% attendance for all pupils, but we understand that children get ill and are not able to attend school on some occasions. The whole school attendance target is 97%.

We are committed to promoting a positive and welcoming atmosphere in which all pupils feel safe, secure, and valued. We will ensure that attendance is monitored effectively and reasons for absences are recorded promptly and consistently.

Attendance has an impact on educational standards. The more a child is in school, the more they can learn!

Category Attendance % Explanation
Excellent attendance 99%+ Great - keep up the good work!!
Good attendance 96%+ Above average and close to our school target
Poor attendance 90 - 96% Attendance may start to impact on learning
Cause for concern <90% Has a high impact on learning

Did you know...?  Having 90% attendance over 5 school years is half a school years work missed?

Exceptional circumstances

There are a very small number of reasons, other than illness, when a child may need to be absent from school e.g. the wedding or funeral of a close family member or a music / sports exam that has been planned during the school day. In these circumstances, parents should ask for a leave of absence form from the office and return it detailing the circumstances that necessitate the absence. All requests will be reviewed by the headteacher before a decision to authorise the absence is made.

Holiday leave

The governors of our school do not encourage any holiday leave to be taken during term time. It breaks the flow of learning and children miss key areas of topics / themes being taught e.g. if a child is away for a week and that week fractions are covered in maths, the next time the children return to this area of maths they will immediately be behind in their learning. If a family has decided that a holiday is being taken in term time, a leave of absence form must be completed and sent to school. The absence will be unauthorised, and the school reserves the right to fine.

School Arrival and lateness procedures:

The School day begins at 8.55am. Children are encouraged to come into school from 8.45 a.m. and start the daily morning tasks. Any child arriving after 8.55 a.m. should enter school through the main office doors with parents / accompanying adults. This will incur a "L" Late mark. Arrivals after 9.25am. will receive a mark which shows them to be in school but this will not count as a present mark and will incur an unauthorised absence. The afternoon sessions begin at 12.45pm. for KS1 and 1.15pm. for KS2. Please see our Attendance Policy on the Policies area of this Website for full details.

SCHOOL ABSENCE PROCEDURE

Please ensure you inform the school of your child's absence by 9.25am. This may be done by telephone ( 01524 823505 ) or email : bursar@slyne-with-hest.lancs.sch.uk

If we do not receive a message by 9.25am, we will text a reminder. Failure to notify the School Office will result in an unauthorised " N " mark – reason not yet established for absence.
