WW2 Evacuees
Year 6 pupils have been stepping back into history as part of their learning about World War II, focusing on what life was like for children who were evacuated from cities to the countryside.
To help bring this period of history to life, the children took part in a range of engaging activities. They created evacuee placards, just like the labels children wore when they were sent away from their families, and used these to imagine the journey they might have taken. Pupils also wrote thoughtful diary entries in English, describing their experiences as if they were evacuees leaving their homes, travelling by train, and arriving in unfamiliar rural villages.
As part of their writing, the children explored the differences between town and country life, comparing busy, crowded cities with the quieter and often unfamiliar countryside where many evacuees stayed. This helped them develop their descriptive writing while also deepening their understanding of how challenging the experience must have been for many children during the war.
