PE
We teach the National Curriculum for PE using the Twinkl Move Scheme of work. We are currently working on a very exciting, new PE curriculum that is bespoke to our school. Watch this space!
Intent
At Slyne-with-Hest St Luke’s, our PE curriculum is designed to inspire a love of physical activity and promote a healthy lifestyle grounded in our Christian ethos of encouraging one another and building each other up. Using the Twinkl Move scheme as our foundation, we aim to provide a broad and balanced curriculum that enables every child to flourish physically, mentally and socially.
We want all pupils to develop the confidence, competence and motivation to engage in lifelong sport and physical activity. Our curriculum offers a clear, progressive journey from EYFS through KS2, ensuring that pupils first master fundamental movement skills before applying them in a wide range of sports and physical activities as they move through school.
Through PE, we aim for all children to:
- Develop essential physical skills including agility, balance, coordination, teamwork and resilience.
- Understand the importance of physical activity in supporting long-term physical and mental wellbeing.
- Experience a broad range of individual, partner and team activities—in both indoor and outdoor environments.
- Learn how to cooperate, communicate effectively and demonstrate leadership.
- Recognise the value of challenge, perseverance and fair play.
- Engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day, supported through Daily Move, active learning breaks and home activity tasks.
Our intent is for every child—regardless of need, ability or background—to access an inclusive and high-quality PE curriculum that nurtures enjoyment, confidence and a positive attitude towards physical activity.
Implementation
PE at St Luke’s is delivered through well-structured, engaging lessons following the Twinkl Move scheme. The scheme provides teachers with detailed lesson plans, technical glossaries and skill progression guidance, ensuring staff have the knowledge and confidence to deliver high-quality PE across all areas of the National Curriculum.
Key features of our implementation include:
A clear progression of skills
- Learning is carefully sequenced from simple to more complex skills.
- KS1 focuses on fundamental movement skills—running, jumping, throwing, catching, balance and coordination.
- KS2 builds on these foundations, applying them to specific sports, dance, gymnastics and outdoor activities.
Consistent lesson structure
- Lessons revisit prior learning and allow time for practice, reinforcement and application.
- Skills, health and fitness, competition/performing and evaluation are embedded in each lesson.
- Opportunities to reflect and evaluate are included through structured assessment questions.
Assessment-led teaching
At Slyne-with-Hest Primary School, assessment in Physical Education is a continuous and practical process that sits at the heart of every lesson. We focus on monitoring each pupil’s progress in key physical skills, developing fitness, and supporting their personal growth, including behaviour, teamwork, resilience, and positive attitude towards being active.
Assessment is woven naturally into our teaching through a range of formative approaches. Teachers observe pupils closely during activities, offer targeted feedback, and encourage children to reflect on their own learning through self‑assessment. Peer feedback and the use of video recordings further support skill analysis and help pupils recognise their strengths and next steps.
This ongoing, child‑centred approach ensures that every pupil at Slyne-with-Hest is supported and challenged appropriately, enabling them to build confidence, celebrate progress, and develop the physical literacy needed for lifelong participation in physical activity.
Inclusivity and adaptation
- Lessons are differentiated to meet the needs of all learners, ensuring accessibility and challenge.
- Adaptations allow pupils with SEND to participate fully and succeed.
Active lifestyle promotion
- We have a school subscription to A-life online, providing fun and engaging physical lesson boots
- Active breaks are used to reduce sedentary time.
Our approach ensures that PE is taught consistently, confidently and enthusiastically, promoting a whole-school culture of health, fitness and enjoyment.
Impact
The impact of our PE curriculum is that children at St Luke’s develop secure knowledge, skills and understanding across all areas of physical education. Regular reference to progression documents ensures that learning builds over time, enabling pupils to achieve well and engage meaningfully in physical activity.
Children demonstrate:
- Improved physical competence and confidence across a broad range of sports and skills.
- Increased understanding of how physical activity supports health, wellbeing and positive mental health.
- Stronger teamwork, communication, leadership and reflective skills.
- Positive attitudes towards challenge, effort, fairness and perseverance.
Our themed indoor units and varied outdoor programme help make learning memorable, supporting cross‑curricular links and deeper understanding. A consistent whole‑school approach to technical vocabulary increases clarity and confidence for all learners.
Wider impact includes:
- Raised profile of PE and sport across the school.
- Increased participation in physical activity at school and at home.
- Enhanced school community involvement through active assemblies, events and competitions.
Through high-quality teaching, engaging activities and a strong emphasis on inclusivity, PE at St Luke’s equips pupils with the physical literacy, confidence and positive mindset needed for lifelong physical activity and healthy living.
Equality, Diversity and Justice (EDJ) in PE
At Slyne‑with‑Hest St Luke’s CE Primary School, our commitment to Equality, Diversity and Justice (EDJ) is central to the delivery of Physical Education. Guided by our Christian vision to “encourage one another and build each other up”, we believe every child deserves equitable access to high-quality PE, regardless of ability, background, or circumstance. We strive to create a culture where all pupils feel valued, supported and empowered to participate confidently in physical activity.
Equality
We ensure that all pupils have fair access to PE learning and physical activity opportunities.
- Lessons are adapted to meet individual needs, including pupils with SEND, physical disabilities or medical conditions.
- Equipment and tasks are adapted so every child can experience success and progress.
- Teachers use Twinkl Move’s guidance to provide inclusive challenges that stretch higher attainers while supporting those who need additional scaffolding.
Diversity
We celebrate the wide range of experiences, interests and cultures within our school community.
- Activities draw upon a broad spectrum of sports and physical traditions, helping pupils appreciate the value of diverse physical practices.
- PE lessons foster positive attitudes by encouraging children to learn from one another, celebrate differences and recognise the strengths each child brings.
- Themed units, collaborations and whole‑school events help all pupils feel represented and included.
Justice
We actively promote fairness, respect and moral courage through PE.
- Pupils are taught about fair play, respect for rules and ethical participation, ensuring they understand what justice looks like in competitive and cooperative environments.
- Behaviour expectations promote kindness, encouragement and integrity, ensuring all children experience psychological as well as physical safety.
- Teachers challenge stereotypes—such as those relating to gender, ability or body image—ensuring every child knows they belong in sport and physical activity.
- The emphasis on teamwork and leadership supports pupils in becoming advocates for fairness and inclusion both within PE and beyond it.
Our vision for EDJ in PE
Through embedding EDJ principles in all aspects of our PE provision, we aim for pupils to:
- Understand and celebrate difference.
- Challenge unfairness with confidence and compassion.
- Recognise the role of physical activity in supporting everyone’s health and wellbeing.
- Feel pride, joy and belonging in the world of sport and physical activity.
By embracing Equality, Diversity and Justice, our PE curriculum supports every child at St Luke’s to flourish, participate fully, and grow into respectful, resilient and active members of our community.
Alongside Twinkl Move we also have specialist sports coaches that come into school to deliver lessons. We also take children swimming in KS2.
