Early Years Themes and Topics (Curriculum)

Dinosaurs

Over the next few weeks our work is going to be linked to different stories. This week we have read 'Dinosaurs love Underpants' and have started our topic on dinosaurs. We have started to learn some facts about dinosaurs and today we had great fun making our own dinosaur fossils! Fingers crossed they turn out ok after going in the oven so that we can explore our rocks and try and find the fossils inside!

The children have had a fantastic time at Williamsons Park! We went to the butterfly house and learned more about the life cycle of a butterfly. We visited the minibeast cave and even had a go at holding some! Then we went on our very own minibeast hunt. We were lucky enough to be able to enjoy a lovely picnic and then a play on the park. An all round brilliant day - thank you so much to everyone that helped and the children for being super duper!
We had great fun preparing for our cake sale on Friday! As well as bringing in lots of goodies that we made at home, we had a go at decorating some cakes that Miss Hayton had made. We had to sieve the icing sugar, mix it together with water until it was smooth and then carefully spread it on top of each cupcake. We did a great job! Thank you for all your donations of cakes and a special thank you to the parents who gave up their time to help us.
We have enjoyed learning about different people from all around the world as part of World Week. We explored the lives of four children; Sasha from Russia, Shakeel from India, Muluken from Ethiopia and Cidinha from Brazil. Here are some of the things we did!

Investigating Smell

This week is our final week learning all about our senses. We have had a great few weeks tasting things, investigating sounds, using our sight and investigating touching different textures. This week we are learning all about smell. We have had the chance to smell lots of different things - we have used some great words to describe what we can smell and we have talked about what smells we like and what smells we don't. The vinegar and mint sauce were not favourites but nearly everyone liked the blackcurrant flavour candle!

A Magical Week in Willow Class!

We have been learning about Jack and the Beanstalk this week and were amazed to arrive at school to lots of magical surprises.

On Wednesday,  we found a huge light up beanstalk that had grown from some magical beans on the table! We talked about how it might have got there and wrote some brilliant stories, have a read of our wonderful work!

Then on Thursday, we discovered some enormous footprints on the carpet of our classroom and fallen leaves at the bottom of the beanstalk! Had the Giant visited us?! We measured the footprints and leaves to find out, comparing the length and using different items to measure. What a fantastic job we did!

Painting with Blindfolds!

This week we have been exploring sight and looking closely at our eyes. We have learnt the names of different parts of our eyes, talked about how we can protect them and made a class graph of our eye colours. We even had a go at painting a picture blindfolded, it was very tricky but we did a great job!

This week our senses focus is 'touch'. We have felt lots of different objects and started to think of ways to describe how they felt. We attempted to go on a 'feeling' walk around school but the weather wasn't very kind to us! We did manage to investigate the different textures of the tree trunks around school and started to do some rubbings of what we could feel. A super start to another fantastic week in Willow class.

Welcome back! We hope you have all had a lovely Easter break. It sounds like the children have been doing lots of exciting thing! This term our focus is on 'The Senses' and this week we are concentrating on 'taste'. We have had a super day exploring the taste of different jelly babies and crisps, coming up with some excellent words to describe the taste and texture of each item. This afternoon we have carried out a 'taste bud experiment'. We have made predictions about how we think the different drinks will taste and then found out that colour isn't always a clue for what something might taste like!

Well done Willow Class you have made a great start to what we are sure will be another fantastic term!
