About Year 1

Transition from Reception to Year 1

As the year begins it is our aim to ensure that all children experience a smooth transition from the Foundation Stage to Key Stage One. As the Year 1 curriculum builds upon and extends the experiences that children have had in Reception, learning through play will continue to be an important part of the school day. As the year goes on, the children will gradually be eased into more formal learning in order to become independent, self-motivated and eager learners.

Reading

In order to continue to make good progress, it is very important that you listen to your child read each day. If you are short on time, just a few pages is enough, with a focus on quality rather than quantity. At school we will attempt to hear each child read two or three times a week, so please ensure that your child has their reading book in their book bag every day. The children will also be given lots of opportunities to read, share and enjoy books at other times.

Spelling

Your child will be bringing home spellings to learn each week; using the Look, Cover, Write, Check format. They will be tested every Friday and new spellings sent home that day. The children will also bring home their spelling books, for you to see how they have got on each week. We would appreciate it if these could be returned on a Monday ready to be used again.

Handwriting

It is important that your child learns to form their letters correctly to gain a flow with their writing. We are basing our first letters on c once the children can form this correctly, they can use this to start the letters a, d, g and e. If you would like some handwriting sheets to work on at home please ask. We also have sheets to help form numbers correctly.

Class Bear

Each Friday, one child will take our class bear and a diary home for the weekend. They will be asked to take the teddy on their adventures over the weekend and record what they have done in the diary. We encourage all children to have a go at writing what they can but it is perfectly acceptable for you to write what your child says to help them. Please return this to school on Monday so your child can share their weekend news with the class.

General Reminders

· The children will be doing PE on Mondays and Wednesdays. Some PE sessions will be outdoors, so we ask that all children have tracksuit bottoms and a top, as well as their normal indoor PE kit in school. Please ensure your child has their PE kit in school every day and that all items are clearly labelled. We encourage children to practise getting dressed at home to help them get changed quickly in school!

· Any letters or reply slips which need to be returned can be put in your child’s book bag. The children are encouraged to check them each morning and give things in after the register.

· The children are asked to bring in their own water bottle to keep in class which they can access throughout the day. The children can fill these up at the water fountain as necessary during the school day and are asked to take them home each day to ensure that they change their water regularly. Please make sure your child’s name is written clearly on their water bottle.
